About Us
Rare Elephants is a free research tool for anyone who wants to look past a stock's ticker symbol and see the actual business behind it. Search any publicly traded company and you'll find years of its revenue, profit, cash flow, and balance-sheet history pulled directly from its own regulatory filings — charted, organized, and ready to explore, without a login, a paywall, or a sales pitch.
The name is a nod to a simple idea in value investing: good businesses, run by honest and able people and available at a fair price, are rare. Finding them takes patience and a willingness to actually read the numbers rather than the headlines. That's the spirit behind the quotes from investors like Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, Peter Lynch, and Benjamin Graham you'll see scattered around the site — reminders to think like an owner of a business, not a renter of a stock price.
Where the data comes from
Every figure on this site is sourced from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's EDGAR system — the same public database every company listed in the United States is legally required to file its financial statements to. We don't estimate, model, or license the underlying numbers from a third party; we read them straight from each company's own 10-K and 10-Q filings, the way an analyst combing through a filing by hand would, just automated and presented as charts instead of a wall of text. A handful of companies also get a hand-checked breakdown of revenue by product or segment, filled in from the same filings, for the cases where that level of detail isn't available as a ready-made data tag.
What you can do here
Search a ticker to pull up a company's full financial history: revenue, margins, returns on capital, the balance sheet, cash flow, per-share metrics, and more, each shown as a chart going back as many years as the filings allow. From there you can dig into per-metric detail pages, read a plain breakdown of where a company's profit actually goes, or run a handful of built-in valuation calculators — a basic DCF, a two-stage DCF, and a reverse DCF that backs into what growth rate the current price already assumes — to sanity-check whether a stock looks cheap or expensive relative to its own numbers. The Moat Screener lets you filter the whole universe of covered companies by the same margin, return, and balance-sheet-strength metrics, if you'd rather start from a list than a single ticker.
What this site is not
Rare Elephants is not a brokerage, an investment adviser, or a source of buy/sell recommendations, and nothing on it should be read as personalized financial advice. It's a window into public data, built to make that data easier to look at — what you do with it is entirely up to you. See our Terms of Service for the full picture, and our Privacy Policy for how the site handles data and advertising.
This is an independently run project, not affiliated with the SEC, EDGAR, or any company whose data appears on the site. If you spot something that looks wrong or have an idea for what would make this more useful, we'd genuinely like to hear about it — see Contact Us.
